These days mobile phones have become an integral part of our life and I just wonder how people managed without a mobile phone some 5-10 years back. When such is the situation its very important that your mobile battery lasts long.
We all use mobile and we think we know everything about mobile phones, but here are some truths which we already know or unknowingly ignore which result in your mobile phone getting switched off because of low battery when you need it the most.

So I thought why not list some tips that will help your mobile battery to serve you better.
- Recharge cycle – Very important factor. Its always a good habit to charge your battery fully in one stretch rather than charging it half, twice. Never overcharge your mobile phone, once your mobile phone flashes the message ‘Battery full’, immediately unplug it from the charging socket.
- Ringtones – If you are a person who chat a lot using SMS and you are using a long SMS tone, it will consume a lot of battery, so use a small ‘beep’ as your ringtone.
- Vibrator – Use the vibrator along with the ringing tone only when it is really needed, for instance if you are in a place with heavy noises use the vibrator else keep it off. As vibrator is a mechanical device it consumes lot of battery power.
- Display brightness – Your screen consumes more that 40% of battery power on an average because you use the screen consumes power no matter you are using it or not.
- Travel Etiquette – When you are travelling, use your mobile phone only for calling someone rather than using it heavily for music, games and browsing. First of all, when you are travelling you phone needs to do frequent hand over or change of signal tower as it moves, which consumes lot of power. You might have experienced this, your phone battery drains very quickly when you are travelling, the reason for this is frequent handovers.
- Themes – Use a theme on home screen that has very less animations, these animations are extra burden on your battery. Also use a screensaver that has optimal animations.
- Games – Play games when you really have nothing else to do because games consume a hell lot of battery power.
- Predictive text – Use predictive text while typing SMS, since it avoids unnecessary key taps.
- Power On/Off - Avoid unnecessary power ON and OFF-ing your mobile phone.
- Usage – Finally I would like to say , use your phone as a ‘Phone’ rather that a game-station, modem, media-player. I agree that , the current phones are meant for multi-plexing of functions but don’t exploit this.
Final Thought
So, how many of the above tips do you follow? Have you got another tip worth adding? How long does your cell phone normally last? Do you buy an extra battery for those times when you really need it?

I’ve always found that the advice from day one of letting your phone totally discharge before charging has always helped, I now get a longer charge from my phone
Actually, the first tip about recharge cycle is no longer true. It was true back when we used NI-MH batteries for cellphones, but with today’s LI-ION batteries it doesn’t matter. LI-ION batteries doesn’t suffer from the memory effect as NIMH batteries do. In fact, LI-ION batteries has a built-in computer to make sure they never discharge completely as this will likely ruin them.
Instead, charge your phone when needed – don’t worry about if you have 5% or 50% battery left.
Right now, I don’t have a mobile phone but I could still manage.
I listen PM3 song on my mobile and it consume a much of battery. Well I keep my mobile on vibrate mode.
Thanks, great post! I find using black backgrounds also extends my battery life but can be difficult to do depending on the phone. You can even Google in black at http://bGoog.com which is awesome.
