Jacaranda Trees in Pretoria

    Hi guys and girls,

below is some information about the Jacaranda tree which I wanted to share with you. Pretoria is flooded with them and it really makes the city look good, but it also creates a mess. I like the colour purple and you will see from the pictures below that it really makes a difference.

    Jacaranda City

Demand for a more flexible approach may be seen Pretoria, the nation’s capital, which is famous for its jacaranda trees. The tree, an import from Argentina, was first brought to the city in 1880 and large-scale planting started soon after.

A hundred years later, more than 50,000 jacarandas adorned the city’s streets, parks, and gardens. South Africa’s parliament passed an act three years ago that declared 198 exotic species as “weed and invader” plants. The law provides for stiff fines and jail sentences for trading in or keeping the plans on public or private land, including suburban gardens.

Officials recently listed the jacaranda under a special category of invasive species, which allows the city to keep existing trees but not to replant them when they die. The idea was that attrition would gradually eliminate the water-hungry alien trees from the city.

Below are some photo’s I took while driving through Pretoria.

Let me know what you think, maybe you have some kind of tree in your area that is the same.

    Hey Daisy the Curly Cat,

I just saw this morning the mess its making. I’m so glad I don’t have them in my yard.

Why don’t you take some pictures and send them to me.

    Thanks for the comment.

I grew up many, many years ago in Malawi, and there were Jacarandas there too, so there is some nostalgia involved for me. I would be sorry to hear there were disappearing.

Having said that though, I do understand about the mess trees make. Next door to us in France there is what I understand is an acacia. Right now it is shedding its small yellow leaves into our garden and our gutters. When it has finished with that, and we have finished clearing up, it will start on its big bean-like seed pods, and they too will go into our garden and gutters. If you miss any one of them, next spring you have a forest of seedlings, with deep roots and very sharp thorns. That tree is evil!

I saw something similar to this tree here in Sweden, but I don’t think it’s Jacaranda. I like the lavender color dressing the city. Beautiful!

We don’t have those trees in the Philippines, but I find it interesting to see that Pretoria roads look a lot like those national roads in our country.

Right, this reminded me to post out some personal pictures online. I’ve taken everything away.

I’ll get back to you once it is up! :)
