As most of you already know, I have moved over to using the Thesis theme and I have not looked back once. The ease of changing and updating your theme will just blow your mind and body away.
In this post I have tried to show how easy it is to customize your theme to make your site different and unique. I have only been using Thesis for just under a month now.
Thesis OpenHook Plugin
The old way of making changes to your custom files was by editing the files and then uploading them back to your server. I never liked doing that.
This has all changed with the new Thesis OpenHook plugin. From the image on the left, you can see ‘Thesis Custom Styling‘ which is your custom.css file and ‘Thesis Custom Programming‘ which is your custom_functions.php file.
Not only can arbitrary HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and even PHP be inserted into any of Thesis’ hooks, you can also easily remove any of the hooked default elements within Thesis with the click of a button!

Place the menu underneath the header
You will notice that the default Thesis theme has the navigational menu on top of the site title, this is somewhat nice but boring. You could change it so it’s underneath the title and that is what I’m going to show you

You can simply copy the PHP code into your custom_functions.php file and it will automatically do the rest. The hooks are ‘thesis_hook_before_header’ and ‘thesis_hook_after_header’.
Put a clickable image in your header
Ok, I know you have seen many sites have a clickable image header instead of the title and this is so basic to do.
My site currently has this feature and it makes it stand out, it solely depends on the size and length of your image as well. Your sites image header plays a very important role and I can not emphasis that enough. Take your time and invest in an image that depicts your content and yourself.
You could outsource it if you want to, that will be your choice. If you have a logo already, then all you have to do is upload it to your wp-content/themes/thesis_15/custom/images folder.
Then simply put the CSS styling code into your custom.css file and it will automatically do the rest. You might have to play around with the height and width to get your image in place as my image is long and wide.
Creating a Blogroll links page
I thought Thesis would have a standard template to display your blogroll links that you had entered via the admin panel, but that was not the case. So I searched the net and eventually found some code that I could manipulate and use as my own.
You can view my links page to see how it will turn out. Now, you will first have to create a page, thats if you don’t already have one to display your links on. Find out what the post number is and then replace the numbers 532 in the code snippet below with your post number.
You can simply put the PHP function into your custom_functions.php file and it will automatically do the rest:

I have edited this post and put the CSS and PHP in a text file. Download the zipped file and get it working on your site in less than 10 minutes.
Conclusion:
Thesis is simple, yet gives you the ability to make changes on the fly. I hope my customizations above have shown you how easy it is to apply the changes.
Over the next couple of weeks, I hope to post more on customizing Thesis. Feel free to let me know what you think or have tried. I’m open to suggestions and your experiences concerning Thesis.

George – You’ve marketed the theme so much that the first $100 made from my blog will go towards purchasing this theme!
Cheers
Sandeep
@Curious Little Person – I hope that was good comment. I’m sort of thinking it is, but not 100% sure. Sounds a bit sarcastic to me as well.
George – I’m serious, I have lately seen many blogs with this theme and I’ve really come to like it! Hopefully this clarifies the sarcasm

@Curious Little Person – don’t worry. I think it was my misunderstanding. I have to agree about many sites using Thesis, let me know when you move over
I can help where needed
I hate changing anything in my theme because I’m always afraid of messing up my blog. I’ve tried a couple of times but made things look worse.
You make it look so easy. Your site is always so informational.

You can always install the Admin Theme preview. Make a copy of the theme you want to edit, modify it, and then use the admin theme preview plug-in to preview your modification. Only you (the admin) can see it
This way you don’t need to worry of making mistakes

@Maria – never be to scared to make changes. That’s how you learn. You can also make a backup of your theme and if all fails then revert back to the backup
Owww please stop talking about Thesis… it makes me want to buy it even more
I’ll hold off for now, though

@Harsh – thanks for the email details. I will consider what you said.
George, I am so glad that you managed to get your head around ‘HOOKS’ and everything, enough to allow you to customize your theme. Unfortunately I couldn’t come to grips with it and so I’ve had to buy another theme that was a lot easier to use.

I tried implementing your code suggestion to get the header to link to the home page. I was successful in getting it to work sort of…
I could get my Tag line to show up, nor could I get #header #logo to remain where I had originally put it, nor could I get my #header #tagline to show in the header. The best I could get was over the tabs. Yuck. Any ideas?
I put my site back to where I started so you could see what I want it to look like if I can get the header pic to link.
@Dale – I just sent you an email about how to get the tagline under the header image. I hope that helps a bit.
Thanks George. I can get the tagline under the header. What I was hoping for was the tagline in the header. And I haven’t been able to push my headline and tag line around like I was before I tried the clickable header. I’m going to leave it for now, but look for a way to get my tag line in the header where I had it before. I thank you for your help.
@Dale – I’m still trying to figure that out. I’m no pro at CSS, I just play around and try things. If I get it right, I will let you know.
Top post George!
I’m still wondering how I can add a coloured text box to my post? Have been looking around for some time on many sites and cannot find a specific example. Its similar to your green box with your RSS subscribe button, but obviously it has many more uses.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers
@Ben – please have a look at my other post about CSS trick for Thesis. You can view it by clicking on the Thesis link in the top menu and then selecting the right post.
I also emailed you an example.
Thanks George, just what I was looking for!
Kind regards
Ben
@Ben – glad to be of assistance
It seems that after doing:
remove_action(‘thesis_hook_before_header’, ‘thesis_nav_menu’);
add_action(‘thesis_hook_after_header’, ‘thesis_nav_menu’);
everything but my main site has the nav bar dropped down. I put the above in Custom_functions.php what am I doing wrong?

@jonathan – I see you are using Thesis 1.4, please upgrade to 1.5.1 as you don’t have a custom.css file when looking at your source code.
When you upgrade you will see that you have a custom.css file as well as a custom_functions in your custom folder. You need to copy all the info from my post into the correct files.
Let me know if you need more assistance.
I am trying to logo to my site but unable to do so.. i have loaded the image and it is not showing up.. please help me out…

I have edited id-logo in document. php to set up the Logo… pls let me know if it is recommended or not…
Rajesh Kanuri´s last blog ..TechCats Host Provider “HostMonster” Review: It Rocks
@Rajesh – use a text editor, there are many free ones. I had installed a new plugin and it might have looking quotes, might be that.
BTW, I checked your site in Fx and IE and the logo is there.
