We all have been hearing; “The money is in the list”, yeah! The money is in the list. So many bloggers fail to build their mailing list with excuses such as, “I am not a marketer”, “I don’t want to sell to my readers”, etc.
Let me tell you those bloggers are the bloggers whose blog has no insurance. Take a look at Darren Rowse’s problogger and Daniel Socco’s dailyblogtips; you will discover they all have a mailing list. Your mailing list is your blog’s insurance, search engine traffic may come to an end, your website might even be hacked, you might be a history in terms of popularity in the next few years or near future, but your mailing list is yours forever.

Reasons to Build a Mailing List NOW
- It is your insurance: As we have in the offline world, so we have in the online world. You have insured your car, house and many other valuable properties but do you have insurance for your web property, you have assets online worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, but have you forgotten that the “altavista of yesterday is now history today”, think about it, you have to build a mailing list which will serve as an insurance for your online properties, it might be your blog or website, just build a mailing list.
- Keep in touch: Your mailing list helps you to keep in touch with your readers. Some readers will come to your blog and might never come again, having a mailing list helps you keep in touch with your readers even if they have forgotten your site, you can send them some of your best posts, tell them more about a web property or just keep them updated. Having a mailing list help you keep in touch with your readers.
- Top level priority: Having a mailing list make you a priority to your readers, some of your readers will not fully read your posts on your blog, some of them will not pay close attention but inside their inbox, they are in a relaxed state, ready to digest anything, ready to listen to anybody. You can tap into this top level priority to make your one time visitors loyal readers.

- Know their mind: You can use your mailing list to get in touch with your readers, unlike a blog post which only 50 people might read out of the hundred who came to your site a day, a very large percentage of your readers will be able to read your message in their inbox, they will also be able to give the right feedback because they read your mail with all their attention.
- Who knows: Yeah! Who knows, you might have a product later, a very big product. Wouldn’t it be a better option to send a mail to thousands of your mailing list subscribers telling them of your product lunch, you already have a foundation rather than just building from scratch. You have access to them, tell them about that product, how it will benefit them e.t.c. They might have visited your blog once and now forgotten you, having a mailing list will help you get to them easily. You will also be able to send them mails several times reminding them about your product which you can hardly do on a blog (except you want to lose a large percentage of your readers.).
Convinced?
Where are you going to start? Aweber is what the pros use; it has lots of tutorials and is easily customizable. In case you are not yet ready to part with some cash, mailchimp is another great alternative, it allows you to use it for free with less than 500 subscribers and 3000 sends a month.

I really failed in it but I believe I have a good email list as feedburner subscriber from where I can extract those subscriber emails and later use it for marketing but definitely a service like Aweber is better.

5 solid reasons. I doubled up my list building efforts recently. Building a list is effective insurance and it also reminds your subscribers “yes, I’m still here
”
Super point about making list subscribers a top level priority. Some don’t have time to read your blog post unless you email it to them.
Thanks for sharing your insight

Wow, awesome article! I really like how you related a mailing list to the term, “insurance”. I guess I always viewed it that way, but I never connected the two words, so great job! I’ll definitely remember that.
Building your mailing list is one of the MAIN strategies I advocate on my blog when it comes to making money online. You are absolutely right: it is insurance for your online business. The only difference is, it starts off small but has absolutely no limits to how far you are “covered” as long as you keep growing it. But you have to treat your list right or it’ll be a useless asset.
Anyway, I retweeted your post, it was a great read! Thanks Onibalusi.

i have learn a lot of things from your blog today ..i have to start a mailing list sooner thanks for the idea
I have always stayed away from listbuilding because of several reasons. I don’t have a product. I don’t have a specific niche yet. Aweber services cost a fortune.
The reasons you have stated are very strong points in favor of list building and I’m beginning to think seriously about it, especially now that I know about an alternative called mailchimp.

How much better is Aweber compared to Mailchimp? Is it worth the money or not? I have a small list on Mailchimp and not sure whether to grow it or go Aweber instead.
.-= Jorgen Sundberg´s last blog ..How I Got 5,000 Views from StumbleUpon =-.
@Jorgen – at this stage I find them both expensive and have not yet signed up. I work hard for my money and feel it’s not worth it at this stage. Maybe when my blog is bigger, I will start using one of them.
I want to have a mailing list but I don’t have the money I need. Thanks for the alternative you have shared.
But I think you can do list building through feedburner but you do all the works of emailing those who are in your list.
.-= Real Blogging Advice´s last blog ..How to Choose Profitable Keywords Using Google Keyword Tool =-.
@Real Blogging Advice – I don’t think you can compare a mailing list with FeedBurner. You can do so much more with a mailing list like having a course automatically emailed to members over a period.
I still don’t have a mailing list. I want to know the advantages of a mailing list and how do I create it… How can I use it to my advantage..I would love to see a detailed post on this topic!

This is something I really do need to start doing. I keep putting off starting a mailing list and I am sure it is a profitable side of many blogs.

I keep putting off my list-building. I don’t even think I have enough traffic yet to even start building a list.
@Conrad – yes, I have also put mine off as my traffic is not that high. BUT we must still keep it in mind when our site does grow, maybe make a small note of it for later.
