Blogging the best of Cape Town style

Article from www.iol.co.za

If a strange woman comes up to you in the street with a small camera and asks if she can take your picture, smile.

Not only will you be on her blog, but she’ll also be paying you a compliment.

Style guru Robyn Cooke is on a mission to bring a smile to people’s faces by praising them for their good style choices.

Instead of pointing out glaring style errors, like many reality shows do, Cooke has a different approach. “I live by what my mother taught me: if you have nothing nice to say then rather say nothing at all.”

As we walk through the city centre she points out the good things about what people are wearing. Some are stopped and their pictures and details taken. Many will end up on her blog with complimentary words attached.

At a boutique, which stocks only South African designs, we meet Sophia Winton and Danielle Rood, both sporting scarfs around their necks.

“Very in this season,” Cooke says appraisingly, and then to the blushing Sophia: “I love the way you put your outfit together.”

A surprised Fatima Diop gets the same treatment. “I love your style, I love the way you’ve pulled it all together, can I take a photograph?”

Interestingly, Cooke says men in Cape Town are very relaxed about what they wear, resulting in more women being featured on her blog.

But Rohan Nothnagel, in a smart, open-necked black shirt, blue denims and sandals, qualifies. He is very casual about being stopped and says: “It’s Cape Town isn’t it? These things happen.”

In a society where perfection is the aim and mistakes are pointed out, often with embarrassing consequences, Cooke comes across as a breath of fresh air.

Cooke is a former public relations and marketing manager for one of the biggest technological companies in the world. She returned to Cape Town in December to pursue her life’s passion.

She did a course on personal styling at the prestigious London College of Fashion while on a sabbatical from her demanding job.

Following that she went on to learn from some of the top stylists in Britain, offering her services for free, when her demanding job allowed it, so she could learn.

On her return in December, she set up a company offering her services as a personal styler and using the blog to give people ideas on what to wear and how to wear it.

“People in Cape Town have their own personal styles, which is so great. I love the way Capetonians change the entire look of an outfit by wearing something unique. Like that woman wearing red shoes for example,” she says, pointing to a stylishly attired passerby. Cooke’s blog address is: styleguidecapetown.blogspot.com
