Police are trying to locate the family of a suspected house robber who was armed with a toy gun and killed while trying to run away from the police at the weekend.

The suspect is believed to be in his early twenties and it is thought that he is from Mamelodi.

Police have also launched a search for his two accomplices who escaped during a high speed chase in a stolen car on Sunday evening.

The black Audi A4 was stolen during a housebreaking in Kilnerpark in the morning and members of the Villieria SAPS spotted the car around 9pm.

Inspector Klaas van der Kooi said a high-speed chase ensued.

Members of the Pretoria Flying squad were contacted to join the chase and spotted the car in East Lynne

“Members of the flying squad took over after spotting the car in East Lynne and chased it for 10 minutes to the Derdepoort area where the suspects abandoned the car and fled on foot,” he said.

Shots were fired by the police and one of the suspects was hit on the upper body and died on the spot while his two accomplices escaped.

Police seized a toy gun, stolen items and vehicle taken in the house robbery.

The name of the deceased will only be announced after his family has been notified.

Van der Kooi said the case was still under investigation and police expect to make more arrests.

Meanwhile, an 18-year-old Grade 12 pupil from Waverley has been arrested on a charge of defeating the ends of justice, after he reported a false complaint of house robbery.

On Tuesday, the pupil appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court and was released on warning while the court postponed his case to December 12.

Van der Kooi said the pupil claimed that he had gone home to fetch books when he was approached by two males who threatened him with knives and forced him into his parent’s double cab LDV.

The suspect said he overpowered one of the robbers, stabbing him, and they then stopped the vehicle and fled on foot.

“Several specialised units investigated the scene.

“The pupil had several cut wounds when the SAPS arrived at the scene and he acted like he was shocked.

“However, after several of the clues on the scene did not add up he was arrested,” he said.

Van der Kooi said it was suspected that the pupil took his parents’ vehicle without their knowledge and damaged it.

After stopping at the school he could not start the vehicle and he made up the story after he realised that he was going to be in trouble.

“The SAPS would like to warn members of the public who lay false charges that they will be prosecuted and will have to deal with the course of justice,” said Van der Kooi.

Hi guys and girls,

well, this post is a bit late and I am sorry for that. I saw that Wordpress has made its icon choice - code name ‘Project Icon’. It has gone with “BD” as in Ben Dunkle, with 35% of the votes. I voted for VS and it came in second place, next time. They display the details of the survey, going into some details about the metaphors and showing first and second place icons.

The image to the left is of the winner, the icons can be seen clearly. I would like to know what you think of the winner? Did you choose the winner?

I’m sure even plugin developers could of learnt a bit from the survey, see what the users like and dislike. They could use the knowledge gathered and better structure their plugins. I’m not saying they are badly structure, don’t get me wrong. They could just learn something.

The post goes into detail and this is a very good thing, if this is going to be the trend that Wordpress follows, then I can’t wait to see Wordpress in 3 to 5 years.

Just hours after a police officer in a convoy allegedly caused an accident by shooting out a tyre on a car, which failed to get out of the fast lane on the N3, a similar convoy later harassed motorists on the highway.

The constable, belonging to an MEC’s VIP protection unit, appeared briefly in the Camperdown Magistrate’s Court on Monday charged with eight counts of attempted murder after the incident on Saturday morning.

Hlanganani Nxumalo, 28, tasked with protecting welfare MEC Meshack Radebe, is alleged to have shot out the tyre of a Mazda sedan. The sedan veered out of control and crashed into a bakkie, injuring eight people.

Nxumalo had been a passenger in a black Volkswagen Golf with flashing blue lights on its way to fetch Radebe from his home in Durban.

He later handed himself over to police.

Nxumalo, who lives at the police barracks in Alexandra Road, Pietermaritzburg, smiled while being photographed yesterday, before magistrate Thys Taljaard entered the courtroom.

The matter was adjourned until tomorrow for a bail application.

A motorist, who would not be named, said that he and his wife had also been harassed by vehicles flashing blue lights while on their way to Pietermaritzburg at about 2.30pm on Saturday.

They were in the fast lane behind a 4×4, with a white vehicle in the slow lane next to them, when a black Golf with flashing blue lights approached them from behind.

The Golf was followed by a black SUV and a silver BMW.

“These vehicles proceeded to tailgate us and flash lights. There was no place for me to go but forward. After forcing me to speed up and cut in front of the vehicle in the lane next to me, they proceeded to harass the 4×4 vehicle that was in front of us.”

The motorist said the convoy had passed them at speed.

“About 4km further on, all three vehicles veered off to the left and then stopped on the side of the highway,” he said.

The occupants then proceeded to take a break next to the highway.

“Why the rush, pushing everybody dangerously out of the way, and then stop for a break? What was the emergency they had to get to for them to travel at that speed and endanger fellow road users?” the man asked.

The latest “blue light” incident has attracted widespread criticism from the public and opposition parties, with the DA calling for Radebe’s dismissal.

Letter writers to The Mercury said they were tired of being bullied by government officials on the roads.

The IFP said that it would call for a review of regulations governing the use of the “infamous blue lights by public office bearers”. Party leader Lionel Mtshali said they were disgusted by Radebe’s “arrogant response” in distancing himself from Saturday’s incident.

“Radebe bears responsibility for the behaviour of people he himself hired in preference to the SAPS VIP unit that he would otherwise be entitled to,” he said.

He said that it emerged last week in the provincial legislature’s finance committee that Radebe had hired a private security unit, “incurring extra cost to the taxpayer and imposing an additional burden on his department’s budget, already overspent by about R100-million”.

He said that the incident might not have occurred had Radebe settled for a VIP security unit ordinarily available to ministers from the ranks of the SAPS.

Several “blue light” cases have been reported this year. They include:

  • A motorist punching a VIP driver after he crashed into another car, seriously injuring its occupants, on the N3 near Camperdown in May;
  • Angus Kenard, 28, of Ladysmith being slapped by the occupants of three SUVs while travelling near Estcourt on June 5. One of the vehicles was registered to the SAPS Protection Services; and
  • Dan Mathee, 84, almost being pushed off the road and shot at by the occupants of a white minibus with a flashing blue light on the southern freeway, also on June 5.

Blue light incidents also dominated headlines last year.

These included public works MEC Lydia Johnson’s speeding convoy being involved in a five-car pile-up in February and ANC president Jacob Zuma’s bodyguard allegedly pointing a firearm at motorists in April.

I just wanted to say that I’m getting my laptop soooooooooooooon. I can’t anymore. It’s almost driving me mad, :).

My brother, Gary, says he won’t tell me the specs. So I have to wait a bit longer until it arrives. A friend of mine is coming to visit SA. They are actaully South Africans staying in the UK, although they ahve been there for some time now.

Anyway, I told my brother that he has around 450 pounds to play around with. He is in IT, so I know I will get something good. I also sent him my minimum requirements.

So when it comes to plugins, are you fussy? Do you try them all or are you selective. Im rather selective, I don’t many as they are just not for me or my site. I do still download the plugins from wordpress.org and make them available from my downloads page.

I try to keep the number of plugins installed down to a minimum, but lately I have started to try out a few. There are so many plugins to choose from, that it would make anyone go crazy. The ideas the authors come up with, they are surely boffins. So the list below is of the plugins I am currently using on this site. What plugins do think are a MUST and are just plain fun? Traffic system eNaTIS may be responsible for the Beaufort West municipality’s loss of R40-million in outstanding traffic fines, papers filed in the Cape High Court revealed.

The papers, filed by Traffic Environment Services and Technologies (Test) - the company the municipality appointed to collect the fines - show the system allegedly captured motorists’ details incorrectly or failed to update their changes of address.

The company is opposing an application for its liquidation lodged by the firm of attorneys it had contracted to do the collections.

The firm, Munnik Basson Dagama Incorporated, alleges that Test owes it R1,15-million but Test denies this.

In an affidavit filed at the High Court, Test director Steven Jaftha said the company operates four fixed cameras and two mobile cameras.

Once a picture of an offending vehicle is taken, it is downloaded on to a computer and presented to a traffic officer who checks whether the picture is sufficient to make a case against the motorist.

The information used to prosecute the drivers are then loaded on the eNaTIS traffic system, which includes a database of all vehicles in South Africa.
