Whether you develop a website from scratch or you have an exisiting website, there are certain mistakes that one should avoid. The following are the most common web designing mistakes made today while developing your website.

Web designing is hard work and takes a lot of thought and patience. One has to have all their ducks in a row and comes with lots of experience.

Navigation:

• Pages without navigation: If you don’t suggest them an option, visitors are more likely to close your page than to hit the browser’s Back button.
• Broken links: Take care of it.
• Hidden links: Make links easily recognized by using a contrasting color; underline them, and using button images or changing the rollover state.
• False links: Underlined text and rollover images scream link. Use them carefully.
• Menus that move: Launch reliable navigation zones and glue with them.
• Unpredictable navigation: Once the user learns how to use your website’s navigation, don’t modify it on him.

Headlines:

• Restyling text instead of using heading tags: <h1> is not the same as big paragraph text.
• Using heading tags for design: Headings are structural elements and should be used to define the reason or point of the text they encircle. Don’t use them just because you want big bold text.

Body Text:

• Using images for text: Text in images can’t be read by search engines.
• Justified type: It’s hard enough to make justified text look respectable on a static printed page. On a dynamic web page it’s nearly unfeasible.
• Using <br /><br /> instead of <p>: It will make formatting tricky.
• Using <br /> to control line breaks within paragraphs: Let the browser choose where your lines break within paragraphs. If you compel the issue you may get odd results as not all browsers size type exactly the same.
• Typos and grammatical errors: Use your spell checker and check out 10 blatant grammar mistakes that make you look unintelligent.
• Type too small: Really, 9 point type on a printed page isn’t contented for most people. On screen it’s illegible for anyone over 30. Except for the small type you’re trying to make unreadable 12 points or even 14 should be your minimum.
• Too little contrast between text and background: It’s really hard to read for anyone.
• Using non-breaking spaces to align type: For tabular data always use tables. To give position type as a design element use CSS styles.
• Ransom note styling: Using too many fonts, styles, weights, sizes and colors is purely too much.

Images:

• Images in web design without the alt attribute: Search engines, screen readers and that little text box that from time to time pops up while your mouse is over an image all use the alt attribute. You should use the same for web design.
• Jigsaw puzzle graphics: Don’t piece images more than required. Each slice needs an extra call to the server.
• Resizing images in the browser: Resize your images in your image editing program previous to placing them on your pages. Images that are gust up in the browser lose superiority and images that are reduced in the browser boost the loading time of a page.
• Improper image format: JPEGs are best for photos and incessant tone images. GIFs are best for images with large areas of flat color. Also, see-through GIFs are prone to ghosting if used wrongly.
• Use of transparent PNGs without Explorer fix: PNGs offer true clearness but it doesn’t work properly in Explorer 6 without a JavaScript fix.

Animations:

• Unreasonable Flash: No matter how unbelievable your Flash splash page is, nobody actually wants to watch it more than once. If you must ‘Flash’ yourself, at least give a ‘skip animation’ or ‘skip intro’ link.
• Non-stop animations: Let your animation cycle move around for few times and then stop it before it gets overly bothersome.
• Too many animations: More than one animation on a web page is just irritating.
• Use of the <blink> tag: Thankfully most of the browsers ignore it.

Philosophy:

• Sheet of paper pages: Your screen is not so wide, that things don’t unavoidably stay where you put them and, when you get to the bottom, you can scroll. Take advantage of the design potential those attributes and others offer.
• Puzzling content and design: HTML tags such as P, H1, H2, etc. are structural elements; they show your page appearance. Organize your content using HTML and generate the design of your pages with CSS.

Miscellaneous:

• No contact information: The purpose of a website is communication. Make sure people can contact you if they’re interested in your work, product or service.
• Dependence on email links: E-mail links only work if the user has an email program available and correctly configured. And you can just hyperlink your email address. Use it.
• Failure to act in response to contacts: It is good to ignore spam but, when a rightful visitor takes the time to contact you, a quick reply is just good manners.
• Auto-play sounds: Unexpected sounds are frustrating particularly in an office or classroom.
• Opening too many windows: confusing user with too many new pages on screen every time they click on a link is just not good.
• Failure to check for cross-browser inconsistencies: Your website should work on Macs and Windows, in Explorer, Firefox and Safari. If it doesn’t work then you’ll drive visitors away.

Do you want to spice up your Thesis homepage a bit? Are you bored of your current homepage? Have you ever wanted to display posts from a specific category? If you answered Yes to any of the questions, then this post is a must read for you.

Yes, it’s another Thesis tutorial that I’m going to share with you all. As I play around more with Thesis, I enjoy it more and see the power I hold in my hands. This Thesis tutorial is very basic and should not take you longer than 5 minutes to setup and get working on your website. This can also be altered to work on any other theme, so don’t be disappointed if you are not using Thesis theme.

Please make a backup of your function and css files before trying this change.

Below you can see an example of how you can make the category boxes look like. These boxes will be displayed at the after your content, but you could change the hook and display it anywhere you like.

Homepage Teaser Category Posts

Please note that the css styling from the above image is different to the one in the download file. So yours will not look identical in the colours being used, but you can make it blend in with your website.

You could also see some of my other Thesis tutorials that I have made available for download. There are a few already for you to try out.

Things to note:

• You will have to change the category box headings. Changes must be made between the opening and closing of the h2 tags.
• You must change the category_name that will be used to query your database. It has to be the same as your categories you have created for your website.
• You can also change the number of posts to selected and displayed (look for showposts=)
• All the boxes are using the min-height and auto height styling. You can disable this by putting in the height dimensions.

You could alter the Thesis function to display the category boxes on all posts and pages. To do this you will have to remove the if statement at the top of the function. You will also have to remove the last curly bracket at the end of the function.

Download the zipped file and get it working on your site in less than 5 minutes. You might have to play around with the formatting if you would like to enhance it a bit more, the choice is yours in the end.

When you have a better understanding of how to make changes using WordPress and Thesis theme, it makes your life easier. In this post I will be sharing about what has changed and what to look out for.

I have gone through a patch of relooking into WordPress, Thesis theme, CSS styling, better HTML standards and even more PHP programming. I am chuffed with my progress and understanding of WordPress and Thesis theme. I say that because I only moved over to using Thesis theme on 25th May 2009 and I have come a long way since then. I also only stumbled onto WordPress about 2 years or less.

As the weeks and months pass by, I learn more and more from other web designers and bloggers around the world. I will be listing the changes I made using what I have learned.Please not that they are not listed in any particular order.

Accordion menu in Sidebar

Accordion Menu

Short Definition: In a graphical user interface, an accordion is a vertically stacked list of items (e.g. labels or thumbnails). Each item can be “expanded” or “stretched” to reveal the content associated with that item. There can be zero or more items expanded at a time, depending on the configuration.

For a more indepth definition, you can view accordion on Wiki to get a better picture.

Ok, this was my brothers idea to start using accordion menu’s and I thought it would be tough. I found numerous sites explaining all the technical stuff and I had it working in no time. Knowing HTML, CSS, PHP and Javascript would be a bonus and an advantage over others.

I had to look at what I would actually use for links and eventually made the decision to go with the most popular ones. So I went for a few categories, downloads, guest posting, services and portfolio.

One of the nice features of the accordion menu is that you can set it to only open the menu sub links. You can use the normal click or you can use the mouseover feature. When a users mouse hovers over a menu, the menu sub links will open. You also have the capability to set how fast it opens.

Teaser Category Posts

I have added some category posts in between the normal teasers on the homepage. I did this to spice it up a bit and try and make my blog unique. Honestly, I was getting bored with the normal look and feel as many other websites/blogs look similiar. These blocks are placed after each teaser box using the Thesis theme like I have done . You can see the example below for a better idea.

By default Thesis teaser box consists on 2 posts which are aligned next to each other. I have made each teaser the full width of the content area, so it will display the category block after 2 posts. I could space the blocks out more if I really wanted to, but I’m not displaying only a few posts on a page.

I have listed the last 5 posts from WordPress, Thesis, Featured & Blog Tips categories. I like the way it has come out and think the dark blue background stands out attracts attention. Let me know what you think of the boxes and position.

Category Highlight before footer

I have added a few category boxes at the bottom before the footer. The background colour changes when you hover over them, I thought this was handy and I liked the effect.

You will only see these category boxes on the homepage so go have a look and let me know what you think. These boxes show the category name and desription which was entered via the WP dashboard. So, I could make wording changes with just a few clicks here and there.

Twitter account unsuspended – New background

If you are a loyal follower of my blog, you would have noticed that my Twitter account (gfserradinho) was suspended for a while. Let me be honest now and say that it was a couple of weeks, maybe even more than a month. Well, I finally got it opened again after many, many, many emails.

I have finally uploaded my new background that was designed by Liane. You can read more about Liane’s services by reading my post about having a professional Twitter background. It’s a must if you are looking for something fresh and exciting. Come on, you have nothing to lose so go have a look.

This is something new for me where I added a few social network buttons via code. Yes, I know all them could have also been done by installing numerous plugins. I have been on a mission for the last 2 weeks to minimize the number of WordPress plugins installed on my blog. I’m currently sitting on 25 and i would like to get it down to 20 if possible.

You can read my post which covers adding Google Buzz button to your posts & pages using Google Buzz WordPress plugin. This plugin is very useful for the users who are not familiar with code and editing their theme. I also reviewed a new Digg clone social network called Shoutmeme, go have a look if you don’t know about it.

Welcome message on homepage

Homepage: welcome new visitors

I created a welcome message that gets displayed at the top of the sidebar. I thought it would be nice to welcome new visitors and even existing fans/followers of my blog.

Although the message is plain, I think it’s very important to welcome visitors to your blog/website. When I visit websites for the first time, I get a nice warm feeling inside when I see a welcome message.

I have only put this message on the homepage, so you won’t see it on posts and pages. I guess you will have to go to my homepage and see it in action, lol.

The new buzz, excuse the pun, is Google Buzz which has just been introduced a while back. This WordPress plugin allows you to add a button to your posts/pages for users to share with others.

You could also use some code snippet to insert the Google Buzz button on your website. I have created a download file for you to use. It should not take you longer than 5 minutes to download and impliment on your website.

Apparantly Thomas Mackenzie alerted WordPress to a problem where logged in users could peek at trashed posts belonging to other authors.

If you have untrusted users signed up on your blog and sensitive posts in the trash, you should upgrade to 2.9.2. This has got me thinking of what others have already seen in my trash. Do you have posts in your trash?
