Tips For Creating First Post With Wordpress Thesis Theme

by meethere on December 17, 2009

Thesis paid theme from WordPress enables all skill levels to easily create search engine friendly blogs, articles and general content, and the powerful intuitive SEO tools helps to increase your website exposure and get your content noticed.

So I expect that before reading this, you have bought a fresh copy of thesis theme and uploaded it on your web hosting account. Now active the theme from your wordpress admin theme settings panel.

thesis-posting

Now, creating new posts with Thesis is straight forward, but if you are new to WordPress and content creation in general then here are just a few tips to get you started as Thesis theme has more advanced features in “new post” section :

1) Title:

This is an important section as it is the visible title of your post, and the first thing your visitors will read so its needs to be punchy, interesting and contain a ‘hook’ so that people will want to read on.

This is not the meta tag header so you don’t need to worry about stuffing the title with keywords, and this means you can concentrate on a title that is relevant and descriptive, and draws the reader in so they stay on your site longer.

One way you can increase the impact of titles in Thesis is to try ‘link baiting’, which is a technique that uses weird or shocking titles to incite discussion such as ‘How Many Puppies Can You Juggle?’ or ‘Top Celebrities Cause Climate Change’.

2) Permalinks:

Initially your new post will go on your homepage but when you start creating new posts regularly this will soon get bumped to another page, but will always remain on the permalink.  Therefore link naming conventions are important as permalinks remain unchanged, and point the way to each archived post, and are important if your post is going to be cited or linked to from other websites (all part of good SEO practice).

It is a good idea to keep permalinks simple, so you can just repeat your title again (shortening it to the main keywords) and replace the spaces between the words with hyphens, as this helps to shorten URL strings and make them more acceptable for search engines.

For example: If your post title was ‘How to Make Christmas Tree Baubles’ your permalink could read something like ‘www.yoursite/make-christmas-baubles’.

3) Content:

As with all blogs and articles the content of your Thesis post needs to balance keywords with interesting, concise and well written content, and it is a good idea to keep them fairly short, between 200 and 600 words.

If you do need to write more on a subject then break it up into several posts, each with their own titles, and this will also help to populate your website more effectively.  Adding topical thumbnail images to your posts is also attractive, and this is easy with Thesis and helps your website to look more visually appealing to encourage visitors to stay longer.

This will also gain you more hits through image search engines such as Google Image Search to increase website exposure and site traffic. So don’t forget to enter those SEO details, Additional Style, Post image, thumbnail details and if required multimedia details too.

Conclusion:

I hope this guest post has cleared up a few details about Thesis and Wordpress. All comments and feedback are welcomed.

From what I’ve read so far about Thesis, it is definitely a good theme. Flexibility is one theme attribute I appreciate most in a theme.

These helpful tips however are also applicable to all other themes as well I suppose. :)
