Have you ever thought how much co2 do we emit while surfing? Like many people I had no idea about how the surfing can pollute the environment (do you?). How exactly are we polluting the environment is still not known to many of us…..

Here comes the onlineleaf in picture which really helps us to save our environment by installing a simple and small WordPress plugin. According to the data every minute the web surfers emits 1.2 kg of co2 by surfing the web. If you calculate it per day then we (yes we are, you are here it means you are emitting co2 like me) are emitting  1700+kg of co2 , that sounds a lot, isn’t it?

green websites Save the Environment with Online Leaf WordPress PluginOnlineleaf helps the environment by hiding the heavy animation and your page by a dark color layer after inactivity of few seconds. Check the screenshot of the plugin to understand the process.

When you mouseover the screen again it will remove that layer and shows you the fully functional web page that you are surfing.

Installation:

  1. Upload the folder online-leaf to the /wp-content/plugins/ directory or search for Online Leaf in Plugins > Add new and click Install to the right of Online Leaf
  2. Activate the plugin through the Plugins menu in WordPress

that’s an interesting plugin for the “go green” movement, am sure by freezing the screen it will save a lot of energy too,

Ruth - Web Career Girl November 27, 2009 at 6:02 pm

This is a really interesting plugin. The only thing I’m worried about is that visitors would be put off, because they won’t be expecting your website to go black. But I suppose since it only goes off after inactivity it’s quite a good idea. I might try it out on some of my ‘green’ blogs first to see how it goes. Thanks for pointing it out!

@Ruth
Your website will be back to normal as soon as they move the mouse. I don’t think it will irritate them. I hope the developer provide us the option of setting the time
Let us know when you use this plugin.

Very unique and interesting concept. Go green for web is really cool and the plugin for Wordpress for the same is awesome. Wordpress users are increasing day by day and I think this plugin should be installed on wired and mashable like blogs (for sure).

@Sanjeev – this plugin just seems to attract a lot of comments. Nice to get everyone’s feedback.

Francis November 27, 2009 at 7:56 pm

COME ON FRIENDS… this is completely ZERO effect at all. I agree with Izzat; the effect is equal to zero – so by saying your blog is green, you will only display lack of knowledge:
1. more than 90% of sold monitors today also uses power when black (only the extremely old monitors does not).
2. calling a blog/website green – even if it was optimized a slight bit – is like saying my car is green because I use fuel with 0,1 % bio mass in the gas….

Lakraj November 28, 2009 at 12:52 pm

You are right, that only about 30 % of monitors will benefit from the black screen, but please go read the concept again. :) It’s not just about going black – It hides animations and visual effects, so the computers won’t spend energy displaying Flash animations and such. It’s not just a Blackle copy.

Installed it on one of my blogs, and it’s really great. I just wish there was some way to adjust the timing, so it will show after 2 or 3 minutes of inactivity instead.

George Serradinho November 29, 2009 at 8:51 pm

@Lakraj – it would be nice if you could give us some links so that we can have a look.

Lakraj November 30, 2009 at 12:24 pm

Sure. :)

Well, found this one http://ecoiron.blogspot.com/2007/08/history-in-january-2007-mark-ontkush.html which describes the CRT and LCD differences. It clearly tells us that CRT monitors do in fact save energy by displaying a black screen, compared to a white.

But that the screen is black, is just a bonus saving (it seems) for CRT monitors, because if you read on onlineleaf.com, another saving is that the black screen hides effects and graphics and such. Not sure how much though, but we all know how much power it takes to display Flash, right? ;) Sure, it isn’t totally neutralized, but it’s a step in the right direction.

Could be cool if they would share their researches though. Then we could see how much effect it has.

George Serradinho November 30, 2009 at 4:40 pm

@Lakraj – back down, slow down. I will have to first go read about it and see what my response will be.

Jannie Funster November 27, 2009 at 7:58 pm

It does sound good and it is. I read few articles about CRT and it does emit co2. We are also saving the environment from light pollution. Although it wont change the environment drastically but we have to everything we can to save it.
