Popular anti-Telkom website gets a new look
Hellkom (http://www.hellkom.co.za), the popular anti-Telkom website launched in 2004 by Gregg Stirton, was revamped recently to better serve the local IT community.
Hellkom made headlines in 2004 and 2005 when Telkom sued the website for R5 million for making unauthorised use of Telkom’s trademark and using disparaging logos. Telkom later withdraw the legal action with costs.
The new-look Hellkom provides visitors with a wide range of local and international IT news links, an ISP and hosting directory and the usual hard-hitting comments about the local telecoms space.
Stirton said that Hellkom had the same look since 2005 and a redesign was needed to give it a more modern look. “The new layout and styling allows for much more information as well as an improved look,” said Stirton.
“The main focus of the site is still to inform and educate people to anything and everything telecoms-related in SA. A lot more effort will be put into maintaining and increasing the amount and quality of information available. Of course humour is also an important ingredient and it will unfortunately be an unavoidable part of the site.”
Stirton highlighted that the site will still inform people about “being taken for a ride” in a lighthearted way. “In our country these days being taken for a ride is so much part of everyday life that we don’t even bat an eyelid anymore, until we know the extent of it. We try and uncover and illustrate the extent of it, albeit only in the telecoms sector at the moment.”
Hellkom said that it plans to create a bigger and better presence with useful and reliable information to help fellow South Africans make better decisions regarding their internet and telecommunications choices.
“With the prices we pay to communicate we cannot afford to make any uninformed decisions,” Stirton concluded.
