Newest WordPress Plugins 09/07

Here are this weeks WordPress plugins 09/07. I tried to get some screen shots of the plugins, but not all had. They are in no particular order, just listed below. Have a look and let me know what you think about them.

BuddyBar in bbPress
Adds the BuddyPress “BuddyBar” to a bbPress1.0+ installation (Requires deep integration).

TwitterGrid

JS Banner Rotate
This plugin uses Javascript to create a platform-agnostic rotating banner image for your website. Unlike similar Flash implementations, this feature will work even on Flash-disabled web browsers. It uses its own set of Javascript libraries, to it won’t interfere with jQuery.

Advanced YouTube Widget
A widget that will enable visitors to add YouTube account or return search results, with a custom number of maximum results per account/search. It’s easy to use , flexible, enables customization of picture sizes and has multiple displays by two(so far) types of content. More will be added in future versions..

Comment Autogrow

iContact Widget
Add the iContact ‘Automatic Sign-up Form’ to your sidebar with this widget. Simply paste the code from the form you created in iContact into this widget. Your form will be converted into HTML (instead of Javascript, which takes more time to load).

Hackadelic Codification
Most of the time, it’s a good idea to separate CSS and JavaScript code from the content. Sometimes, though, it is very specific code that you need for a single post or page only. The easiest way to do this is to embed the code in the post itself – a task not well supported for in the standard WordPress post/page editor. Until now…

BackType Tweetcount
Lets you show the number of times each of your blog posts have been linked to on Twitter. It also lets users easily and quickly retweet a link to your post.

Now Reading Reloaded
It’s a fork/re-enlivening of Rob Miller’s original Now Reading plugin. It is forked from Rob’s code as of 4.4.4svn, in order to update its interface to work with WordPress 2.7 and above.

NFB Video Plugin
Was designed to help users who use WordPress to be able to quickly and efficiently place embedded videos on their page. Now, for sites that are oEmbed autodiscoverable, we have cut this down to pasting a link such as http://www.nfb.ca/film/arkelope/ into the blog post, and whenever your post is loaded, it seeks out your embed details.

Booking Event
This plugin allows you to create a bookable event using the custom fields. A post creator can make a post ‘bookable’ selecting the custom field ‘bookable_event’ (automatically created at the plugin activation) and setting a value for it, e.g. the ‘yes’ value. The registered users can add/remove their participation to an event (represented by a post) by links at the bottom of the post. This plugin provides also a widget displaying the list of the last ‘bookable events’ added.

backtype is a great plugin. It counts all the tweets made to the link. It has a new retweet button as well

That’s the beauty of WordPress. We get newly updated plugs to make our blog more appealing and useful. TwitterGrid will be best for my personal blog.
Thanks for sharing this useful information

Nicholas Z. Cardot July 9, 2009 at 6:05 pm

I’m looking for a good video plugin because I want to start doing a little bit of text and video blog posts. I’m going to look into using that plugin that you mentioned up there. Thanks for the recommendation!

@Nicholas – try and let me know. You could also try ‘Viper’s Video Quicktags’, I use to use it and it’s a great plugin as well.

Curious Little Person July 9, 2009 at 8:49 pm

George – good list of plugins! But off late i’ve been really selective in using plugins as a lot of them, really slow down the speed of my blog…

Thanks for the info Anyways

Cheers

George Serradinho July 10, 2009 at 6:51 am

@CLP – you are 100% about being selective. I currently have 19 plugins and still looking at reducing them. Good decision my friend.

Sire July 10, 2009 at 2:43 am

That is a really great list of plugins. My only problem is that I already have way too many plugins, and too many plugins can slow the loading time of a blog, so I tend to not install any more unless I feel it will do a better job of one that I already have. That or it provides something that I really want.

George Serradinho July 10, 2009 at 6:53 am

@Sire – you are like Curious Little Person and myself, trying to keep our plugins at a minimal. You are correct in doing what you are. I have 19 plugins and I’m still trying to reduce them :)

Sire July 10, 2009 at 10:57 am

Believe it or not, I have 35 and I can’t bear to part with any of them :(

George Serradinho July 10, 2009 at 8:17 am

@Sire – how many plugins do you have? Try and keep them as low as possible.

Sire July 10, 2009 at 11:01 am

Believe it or not I actually have 35 and I can’t see myself dropping any of them :(

Klaus at TechPatio July 11, 2009 at 12:48 am

Regarding BackType Tweetcount, doesn’t it only work (ie. “count tweets”) if the tweet contains the actual URL (e.g. permalink) and not a tinyurl, bit.ly, tr.im etc. URL?

@Klaus – a good question indeed, will have to go read up about it.

Ruchi July 11, 2009 at 7:54 pm

TwitterGrid looks cool, thanks for updating the list.

Adrenalynn July 11, 2009 at 8:39 pm

Great list! I like how you also added screenshots and descriptions to the plugins, that way I could click through to the ones that really interested me. As you I try to keep my plugins to a minimum, so I don’t think I’ll install any of them, but I would definitely go for the YouTube one if I posted more videos on YouTube. The map plugin was really cool, but I’d never use it. I also like the shadow plugin, but I don’t usually use blockquotes or images that much, so I wouldn’t get much use of that one either. But if I had the kind of blog where I’d be interested in focusing on certain text or elements in each post I’d definitely consider it.

@Adrenalynn – yes, the screenshots make a huge difference. Thanks for your opinion :)

Stuff About Life July 18, 2009 at 5:57 pm

Sadly, I had to remove the BackType Tweetcount plugin as it was causing extremely long page load times. It was taking 15s for pages to load for new visitors. That was causing visitors to think the page was down, and they simply left. Twitter Tools has been more useful, because people are re-tweeting from within Twitter instead.

George Serradinho July 19, 2009 at 9:09 am

@Stuff About Life – never installed BackType Tweetcount, thanks for letting me and everyone know.
