Newest WordPress Plugins 10/09

BlakeConsultants - The Leading Experts in Biometric Access Control and Time & Attendance

Well, here is another WordPress roundup of the newest plugins available to you for download, try them out and see which ones you like and don’t like.

WordPress Reusables
Was created to help developers manage their content more efficiently. By allowing content to be stored and edited in a single location on WordPress it is possible to update a single piece of content that will update retroactively anywhere that the reusable is being used.

This plugin creates a more front-end approach to templatizing content and even makes it possible to create or modify an entire theme without touching the PHP code.

WPSuperCountdown
You can hide some content (like whole articles, links, graphics, or videos) for a definable period of time. When the countdown reaches 00:00:00 the hidden content will show up and replace the former counter. Also a cookie will be set so the user don’t see the specific counter again but the whole article without latency.

It also Displays your images next to the excerpt of your Blog Post. This is the perfect solution for everybody who wants a nice flowing slide show under their navigation bar, for example:

LJ Subpages Widget
Allows you to display a menu listing subpages from a chosen page. This plugin was developed as I needed a widget to display a list of subpages in my sidebar. All the other plugins that I found would only display subpages from the current page being displayed.

Features:

  • Will display the subpages of a chosen Parent page.
  • Customizable Title with the choice of using the Parent Page Title or writing your own
  • Compatible with subpages of subpages. You have the option of displaying Subpages of the Subpages being displayed (This depends on your theme, your theme must support submenus in the sidebar for this option to function as expected)

Dashboard Custom Menu
This simple plugin allows admins to add custom menu items to the dashboard sidebar. The plugin works by creating a new menu and placing it on the left side of your dashboard. You can add new menu links, adjust the security level for each and have the custom menu items link to any URL.

Easy FAQ
This plugin allows you to easily create a FAQ page for your WordPress blog. Visitors can submit their questions on the front-end and browse through the archive. The questions are presented with a nice sliding accordion effect.

On the admin interface you can answer (and approve), delete or modify questions. Also the plugin offers the option to get notified each time someone submits a new entry.

Final Thought

So, what did you think about this weeks plugins? Did you try any of them? Did you like them or are you trying to keep your plugins to a minimal? I would love to get your feedback on the questions I have asked.

Been away for awhile. What have we got here Doug? A set of new hot plugins! These are all cool plugins, though I particularly like 3 of them most: the slider, the countdown and the ticker. I would have loved the content slider to be more flexible by giving us freedom to just select articles from various categories for inclusion (so we can title it “Featured Articles”) instead of limiting it to 1 category (thus, “Featured Category”).

I have to have these plugins :) But this probably requires another major re-arrangement to my blog which has just recently undergone a facelift.

@N.Moralde – you could use Featured Content Gallery plugin, you can choose from 1 to 5 different categories.

gautam hans September 10, 2009 at 12:21 pm

I personally love content sliders but the problem with them is that the content sliders use javascript and take considerable time to load plus they don’t display sometimes when the browsers doesn’t support javascript

George Serradinho September 10, 2009 at 12:35 pm

@gautam – you are correct in what you are saying. I had the plugin installed and then removed it. It was cool having it, but I wanted to use something else.

Jason September 10, 2009 at 7:53 pm

Ive been thinking of installing content slider but a few sites that do have them seem to load slower, and I just figured out why. Good point Gautam. I wont be installing one afteral.

George Serradinho September 10, 2009 at 7:57 pm

@Jason – there you go, help right here :) I also had one plugin using javascript for featured content, but uninstalled it.

Jason September 10, 2009 at 8:02 pm

Yup, that is why I like reading comments. Even if I do not have anything to say about the post I may find something interesting in comments.

I will make sure to go through all of my plugins to make sure they are not javascript, at least not to have too many.

George Serradinho September 10, 2009 at 8:14 pm

@Jason – have a look at your source code and look for ‘.js’. You should be able to pick up quickly if you have javascript.

Pallab September 14, 2009 at 8:37 am

I think that featured content sidebars could be great for any of us running any type of business with an online presence. We can use it to highlight sales etc, without changing the general content of our sites.

George Serradinho September 12, 2009 at 10:38 pm

@Mark – glad to know, try it out and let me know what you think.

Plus Size Shopping Online October 9, 2009 at 9:44 am

Tried WP Reusables and it shows A LOT of promise – I recommend downloading it and give it a try. Just be aware of 2 things:

1) The author recommends downloading for his site instead of the WP site

2) It doesn’t install correctly: when installing it gets placed inside a subdirectory under the wp-reusables directory which wont work. It should just be wp-content/plugins/reusables – so I had to go to my Cpanel and move the folder to the correct location.

slekha October 20, 2009 at 6:15 pm

I like to use WPsupercountdowner, But the Author is designed for only to insert in Post. If he or she provided option to add this counter directly in templates, then it can be more useful, Act in my site i have some downloading files i want to display these files after some seconds of time, and these file directly calls from template not included in Posts, I am ready to pay some bucks if some modify and give it to me…

George Serradinho October 21, 2009 at 6:58 am

@slekha – have you advertised it? Maybe there are developers who are willing to code it for you.
