Spice up your Portfolio using Portfolio WordPress Plugin

Today, I am going to be doing another review of a WordPress plugin. This plugin is WP Portfolio and it’s very easy to use and benefit from it. A plugin that allows you to show off your portfolio through a single page on your wordpress blog with automatically generated thumbnails.

If you are a freelancer and need a way to show off your portfolio, then this plugin is for you. It’s very easy to use and you can be set up in less than 5 minutes.

This plugin is written by Dan of danharrison.co.uk, otherwise known as Daniel Jago Harrison. In case you were wondering, his middle name Jago is the Cornish form of Jacob. He says that he is often asked how to pronounce his middle name, it’s pronounced “Jay-go”.

Installation Instructions

  1. Extract the zip file and just drop the contents in the wp-content/plugins/ directory of your WordPress installation
  2. Activate the plugin from Plugins page.
  3. Edit a page that you want your portfolio to appear on and paste some code into it.
  4. Add your websites in WP Portfolio within your Wordpress admin area.

Simple Usage

The plugin requires you to have a free account with Shrink The Web to generate the thumbnails.

  • To show your portfolio, create a new page and paste code into it.
  • You can show all or a part of the portfolio from within code by using the function.
  • You can show a random selection of your portfolio from within code by using the function. Please note that there is no group information shown when this function is used.

WP Portfolio Plugin – Admin Panel

WP - Portfolio Plugin Admin Panel

This will appear on the left hand side where all the other panels are. In my admin area, this panel appears second last. This panel shows you all the links to the different settings.

  • WP Portfolio – Shows you all the websites you have listed in your portfolio. You will be able to delete or edit each website.
  • Add New Website – I think this means exactly what it says. You will have to enter the name, url of the website, a small description and then get to choose which group it belongs to.
  • Add New Group – You enter the groups name, a small description and then the order. This helps when you have more than one group.
  • Website Groups – Shows you all the portfolio groups. You will be able to delete or edit each website. I also like that it shows the total number of websites per group, this is a bonus if you ask me :)
  • Portfolio Settings – This is the engine and the plugin thumbnails will not work until you enter the details in correctly. The details are STW access key ID, STW secret key, thumbnail size, days to cache, etc.
  • Layout Settings – Here you can edit the template layout as well as the CSS styling.
  • Documentation – All the documentation of the plugin is displayed here. What to use and how, layout template and css code as well as the function codes.

Screen shots:

Below are some screen shots of the rest of the plugin settings/pages.

Examples of plugin in action:

  • You can visit my portfolio page to see it working on a full page
  • You can view my blog at the bottom and you will see sites being promoted via the random group selection.

Final Thought

I think this is a plugin for anyone wanting to get into showing their profile to others. Lets them see what kind of work you have done and it will surely benefit you. Let me know what you think about this plugin, I’m ready for it :)

Are you using this plugin? Have you installed it yet?

I agree with you George. The most common mistake which we make when we install a plugin that we never read the Guide come with that plugin and because of it, we always make a mistake and never able to use it to maximum level.

Not really a plugin that I have a need for right now but it still gets bookmarked in the event I need it in the future.

I wonder if I would benefit from using this on my Insane Limos blog to show my Limo fleet to guests? Your thoughts?

That looks like a pretty cool plugin. I have a few websites, and I’ve thought about consolidating them for display in one place. Sounds like this might do the trick.
