Plugins I think should be part of WordPress core functionality

As being a WordPress user myself, I find myself asking a few questions about the developers and the plugins being used on blogs and sites now days.

As many of you know, there are hundreds and hundreds of WordPress plugins available for us users to download. There is almost a plugin for every need and that is why I have asked myself this question a million times. What plugins could be put into the core of WordPress?

I know one of the reasons is to keep WordPress clean and user friendly while not putting to much load on the database. It’s also to give the user more choice of deciding what is best for their site. There could be numerous other reasons as well, but I think these are the important ones that I have listed.

WordPress Core Functionality

WordPress Core Functionality

As I go through all my plugins installed on this blog, I can really see a few plugins that could be part of the WordPress core functionality. They never change and I think they could give the user more options. The user could enable or disable them at a click of a button and when they want to.

The WordPress plugins that should be looked at are listed below, have a look and see if you agree with me.

Dofollow plugin
Plugin Description: Selectively disable the “nofollow” tagging for comments. (Plugin link)
My conclusion: This could be built in so that the admin could choose if he/she wants their blog/site to be dofollow or not. I know Google has made changes, but this would still be cool. Many bloggers specifically look for this attribute on other sites.

MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer plugin
Plugin Description: Saves your wordpress blog from getting tagged as ping spammer. (Plugin link)
My conclusion: This can be built in so that it does not ping services when you update any post. It should not be doing this any how. I feel that this is a bug in WordPress, correct me if I’m wrong.

No Self Pings plugin
Plugin Description: Keeps WordPress from sending pings to your own site. (Plugin link)
My conclusion: Why would you want to ping your own site anyway. That’s just silly if you ask me. This is yet another bug in the system, the second one I and millions of others know.

Subscribe To Comments plugin
Plugin Description: Allows readers to receive notifications of new comments that are posted to an entry. (Plugin link)
My conclusion: This will enable the admin to decide what he/she wants and it must have an option to disable or enable at any time.

WP-DBManager plugin
Plugin Description: Manages your Wordpress database. Allows you to optimize database, repair database, backup database, restore database, delete backup database , drop/empty tables and run selected queries. Supports automatic scheduling of backing up and optimizing of database. (Plugin link)
My conclusion: This would be a cool feature if included, many don’t install a plugin like this until it is really needed and thats sad.

Login – LockDown plugin
Plugin Description: It records the IP address and timestamp of every failed login attempt. If more than a certain number of attempts are detected within a short period of time from the same IP range, then the login function is disabled for all requests from that range. This helps to prevent brute force password discovery. (Plugin link)
My conclusion: This would help newbies in ensuring that their site is not attacked a lot.

Contact Form plugin
Plugin Description: I know there are many different plugins for contact forms and I admire the plugin developers. They have so many different options available and we just need a simple one with WordPress.
My conclusion: It would be nice to have a standard contact form which is part of WordPress and can integrate well with Askimet. A simple, but effective contact form is all that is required, nothing fancy. The user must be able to enable or disable this function at any time with just a click of a button.

All in ONE SEO Pack plugin
Plugin Description: Optimizes your Wordpress blog for Search Engines (Search Engine Optimization). Plugin link
My conclusion: It’a nice wshen you can play around with what Search Engines see. Customize it. Some of the new themes have this built into there core, some don’t. This plugin is sure to help you achieve better results. Added from comment by Tech-Freak Stuff.

Conclusion

WordPress Core Tools

I’m not saying that I’m not grateful to the plugin developers for providing these functions, but would it not be nice to have it part of the WordPress core functionality.

I doubt that it would increase the size of WordPress or make it more complex as some of these plugins are almost never updated and are very basic. A few of the plugins I have mentioned above are only for the backend of WordPress and the others are for the front end.

I would like your thoughts on this issue, your feedback would be appreciated. What other plugins would you like to see part of WordPress core functionality?

Come on and have your say, don’t be shy. I won’t bite or tell on you :)

George… I absolutely agree that Wordpress should come with those functions built right in. Did you send a link to this post over the the Wordpress team? I would, but I am not sure who to send it to :)

I use the majority of these plugins, so I agree that Wordpress should have this built into it’s core, the mass of Wordpress users will probably agree with you and maybe as Doug said you should send a link to the post to Wordpress..

Most of those plugins are often part of “must have plugins for wordpress”-posts that you see every now and then, so yeah, they really are great and many people apparently think they (or the functionality that they offer) should have been part of wordpress per default – and I agree.

@Klaus – It would be nice if some where part of WP core, but I do understand that not all have to be. Just the ones that are very obvious.

Yea I think these should be in the core of WP. But are you sure when we update a post it ping the services again?

If I am not wrong, to ping again, we’ll have to unpublished and republish. Can someone cross check this please. Because if for each update wordpress ping again then that’s bad :-? I have posts that are updated each week (that is same link but updated each week)…this could become bad.

In the last wordcamp we had a word with Matt (Founder of Wordpress) and we talked about integrating all in one seo plugin with wordpress and more over changing the default permalink to SEO friendly permalink which is must have for a new bie.. Though he replied by saying that he wants users to decide what he wants.. and what he need… When it comes to SEO wordpress is as it is 80% SEO friendly now selecting platinum SEO plugin or ALL in SEo plugin is based on user discretion…

Well i really doubt it is a wise decision. It will increase the size of wordpress file and it can affect the loading time as well.
Logic lock-down and pinging option is good as it is related to security.
Good points you have pointed out here

@Ricky – I think it would be faster if it was part of WP core. Anyway, whether part of WP core or plugin, one’s site/blog still has to make the calls and get the value’s.

37 Fred Hart October 4, 2009 at 5:24 pm

Some very good points here. Particularly with the No Self Pings plugin – a ping from one’s own blog isn’t really using the comments system effectively.

I installed the Plugin this morning because I think comments should really show how other users (not the admin) are interacting with the blog.

I can’t say I agree about removing self pings. I find it’s a good way to link your posts. Sure a related posts section is good too but it’s never as good as manual linking.

@Mihai – you have a good point, but you could do internal linking in your post which I think is far better.

41 Mihai Secasiu October 5, 2009 at 5:54 pm

I do internal linking but with pingbacks I only have to do it in one place. Without pingbacks I would have to go back end edit any post I link to in a new post.
