They are ready to go right out of the box. They are super easy to customize the look by making some simple css modifications. They have a great support forum where you can ask questions and you get answers back really fast. I have used their themes for at least 20 of our sites, which many were just flips. Maybe stay with a free theme until you make enough to pay for a premium theme. I have to mention that support on free themes is sometimes missing, when you buy a premium theme then you have support and maybe even a community.
