We all know there are many WordPress plugins that we could use to show ads on your site and they are all very different. It’s always difficult to choose one as they all offer different features. I would say the decision lies with the individuals own capabilities.
Today, I’m going to talk to you about a simple yet functional WordPress plugin called AdRotate by Arnan de Gans. It’s very easy to install and setup and will take you a few minutes and you are done.
Run down of features:
There are many features for AdRotate plugin and I have listed them below.
- Show random banners
- Track how many clicks, shown, CTR
- Timed banners, start and stop dates
- Activate or de-activate banners at will
- Edit/update banners
- Widget included for sidebar
- Insert banners into pages or posts with shortcodes
- Preview banners on edit
- Per banner/function to set a specific banner or keep it random
- Multiple groups per banner location
- Works with Google Ads
- Easy in use
- Integrates with WordPress dashboard, yet allows you to completely style to your own need
Installation of AdRotate Plugin:
Below are details of what to do when installing the plugin. You will first have to download AdRotate plugin from WordPress.
- Upload the folder to the plugins folder.
- Activate the plugin from the “plugins” page in dashboard.
- Review the manual for usage tips.
- For making it easy to make money you should make me some money
AdRotate attempts to create the ‘banners/’ folder by itself, if it doesn’t exist and you need it. Create it using your FTP client in the wp-content folder!
Basics of AdRotate plugin:

The plugin comes with widgets that can be used in sidebars as well as shortcodes for you to place in your theme and pages/posts.
After installing and activating the plugin, you will see an extra menu named AdRotate. This gives you access to:
- Manage Banners
- Banner Wizard
- Add|Edit Banner
- Manage Groups
Menu – Manage Banners:
This will show you details about what banners are currently loaded and running and where it is being shown on your site. How many impressions and what the click through rate is. It also shows the start and end date of the banner.

Menu – Banner Wizard:
You will have to go through all three steps to create a banner. Follow the instructions carefully and all should go well.

Menu – Add|Edit Banner:
By clicking on this you can add a new banner or edit an existing banner. Change the title of the banner and the code being used, change the start and end date and various other settings.
Use %link% where you would put the URL and fill in the URL in the URL field in the advanced options and make sure to tick the checkbox to see the number of clicks on the banner.

Menu – Manage Groups:
You can create multiple groups for different kinds of banners and give a descriptive name so that it helps you. This will also show you how many banners are present in each group.

To un-install the plugin:
If you would like to un-install the plugin from your site, you can follow the instructions below and all will be gone.
- Remove the code from your theme and de-activate the plugin
- Remove the files from wp-content/plugins
- Go into PhpMyAdmin and remove the tables with ‘adrotate’ in the name
So, what do you think of the plugin? What plugin do you use to show ads on your site? Do you think the plugin is something you would use or suggest to others?

This was a very nice and detailed review of the plugin. Thanks Greg Ellison

@Greg – glad you liked it. I was going to ask you what plugin are you using for ads, but I could not see any ads on your site.
This plugin sounds like just what I need. Occasionally I manually put ad code into a post but for the most part have neglected this. Excellent review – clear and complete. Thanks!

@Christie – thanks for your feedback. Let me know what you think or if you need assistance.
Great review George. I just started using WP125 yesterday, so I’m going to give that a shot for a little while. If it doesn’t work out as well as I hoped for, I’ll definitely be reading this review in full one more time, and likely switching over!

@Gooroo – I also use to use WP125 and that is also a great plugin.
Hey George nice plugin indeed. I still don’t have a lot of ads to display on my blog but I will sure write it down for the near future. Thanks.
.-= Asswass´s last blog ..Support Freedom of Speech in Venezuela =-.
@Asswass – glad to hear, but you don’t need many ads to use the plugin. It can even be used if you have 1 or 2 banners.
Great review…
Will definitely check it and try it out on my blog. hopefully it increases my revenue
.-= Nihar´s last blog ..July 2009 Blog Traffic & Income statistics =-.
@Nihar – It won’t increase your revenue, it will help to rotate banners and other ads you might want to show on your blog.
Great thorough review George… my favorite kind to read. If I wasn’t already using Max Banner Ads Pro I would definitely give this one a try as they seem to have very similar features. Looks awesome.
.-= Doug Dillard´s last blog ..What You Can Do With PLR Content? =-.
@Doug – so you are using Max Banner Ads. I used that plugin, but the free version and the features were great. The free version had the link back to them which I did not like showing. I never bought the Pro version.
Yeah… I hate “link backs” in software… so I bought the Pro version and love it!

@Doug – glad to know. I guess Max Banner Ads has probably changed since I last used it?
This plugin seems much better than the one I am using. I am using “adman” and it is good but it only tracks clicks. This one does a whole lot more, I think I will give it a whirl. Thanks for the detailed review.
.-= Tycoon Blogger´s last blog ..installed wibiya toolbar at the bottom of my blog – what do you think? =-.
@Tycoon – glad to hear. This plugin can track clicks and I think is a bit more flexible than adman. Let me know if you need assistance.
This is cool!
I currently use a script code that I put in the wordpress file. Now it’s easier with the plugin! Thanks a lot!
.-= BloggerDaily´s last blog ..In The Eye of The Readers =-.
@BloggerDaily – give the plugin a try and see if it works for you. You can use the code or the widget, it’s your choice.
Thanks for sharing about this plugins George. I do agree that this plugin is much better than Max Banner Ads.
Ps : By the way George, I’ve just add the direct download link to “invicible” album
@shraqs – thanks for the vote. I see the links are there now for the “invicible” album, thanks for that.
Oh wow this is probably one of the best I have seen George, I will admit I haven’t seen a bunch of them but I like the options this one offers.
.-= Extreme John´s last blog ..What is Bounce Rate? =-.

@TechZoomIn – what are you using for your ads? Would you try this plugin? Glad you liked it.
Well currently I am using a plugin from UBD Block Ad for ad-serving but I will give this plugin also a try secretly

.-= gautam hans´s last blog ..350+ Fresh Twitter Icons =-.
@gautam – plugins are amazing and you need to try them and see if it’s for your blog or not.
I have been using this plugin on my Thesis powered wordpress blog and I’m so happy with it.
The plugin is great and I don;t have to worry about removal of direct or adding any banner on my blog..
A must have for wordpress blog if you get lots of direct advertisement.
.-= Harsh Agrawal´s last blog ..FaceYourManga : Create Free Online Avatar =-.
@Harsh – it has made life easier for me and I like the direct features, it’s easy for me
Great review of what looks to me a great plugin. Bookmarking this for later. At the moment I’m waiting to try out BuySellAds.com but I heard they are taking 25% of every sale which truly are a lot. How do you get paid by people before adding their ad? Or do you only use this for affiliate programs?
.-= Stefan´s last blog ..How to Backup and Restore Your Wordpress Blog =-.
@Stefan – try and use PayPal for payments, that is what I use and it seems to work. PayPal takes some money off, but it’s very little.
I will probably do so. Started to use Paypal for my first time when I bought Thesis because for some reason they would not accept my credit card. After spending more time with international affiliate networks I have noticed that many of them can pay you through Paypal.
.-= Stefan´s last blog ..Build Backlinks With Article Directories =-.
@stefan – PayPal is cool and helps a lot. You can send and receive money.
