Klaus @ TechPatio December 8, 2009 at 3:07 pm

Definitely a nice plugin. I’ve been using it for a few months now. Have it set up to display top commenters for the last 30 days, so it’s a “rolling 30 days” and doesn’t reset every month for example.

Lee Ka Hoong December 8, 2009 at 6:09 pm

I’ve been using this plugin for months and that’s a great plugin as it attracts readers to leave comments on the blog, also it’s a way to say thank you to all the commentators. I just mad my blog dofollow to commentator’s link. I’ll be writing a comment policy too, I’ll remove comment which is not complied with the policy. :)

Cheers,
Lee

George Serradinho December 8, 2009 at 8:23 pm

@Lee Ka Hoong – yes, it does help with comments. One issue is users sometimes just leave comments to be listed, one must moderate those comments.

Lee Ka Hoong December 9, 2009 at 4:34 am

Yea, that was the thing I concern in the past. But I’m not that care about my PR anymore, as long as it doesn’t drop. Also, I’ll be more strict in moderating comments, one liner and great post comment will be removed without any excuse. :)

Gabe | freebloghelp.com December 8, 2009 at 7:35 pm

This plugin is a must-have for many blogs. If building a community is important to you (i.e. getting comments), this is one way to motivate those who like to keep score.
.-= Gabe | freebloghelp.com´s last blog ..The secret ingredient for reaching goals =-.

George Serradinho December 8, 2009 at 8:26 pm

@Gabe – one still has to moderate comments left as some users will take a chance by leaving stupid or short comments to be lkisted on the widget.

Karl Foxley December 9, 2009 at 4:06 pm

Top Commentators is one of the best plugins out there for rewarding your visitors that take the time to comment. I have mine set to reset every first day of the month so that people don’t get discouraged when they see the top slot is held by someone with hundreds of comments.

Karl
.-= Karl Foxley´s last blog ..Introduce Yourself and Get Some Link Love! =-.

George Serradinho December 9, 2009 at 5:01 pm

@Karl – I agree with you about the reset every month. I have noticed that some users have a look at it and some times email me as to help them get higher or to complain about a user who is leaving short comments. I have my comments set to automatically accept comments from users with previous comments approved. I still how ever check those comments to make sure they are valid, some times I deleted them and other times I let them slide (depends on the user and my mood).

Karl Foxley December 9, 2009 at 5:50 pm

I’m playing around with the idea of allowing the comments to bypass the moderation process, how often do you get invalid (spammy) messages come through in comparison to your authentic messages? Have you seen a rise in spammy comments?
.-= Karl Foxley´s last blog ..5 Time-Tested Tactics To Boost Your Christmas Sales =-.

George Serradinho December 9, 2009 at 7:10 pm

@Karl – most of spam comments don’t get published unless they have previous approved comments. There is a setting by Settings >> Discussion and then check ‘Before a comment appears’, it’s the second check box. Maybe try it for 2 weeks and see how it goes, you could always revert back to previous settings. I also hold comments with 2 or more links, be sure to not let spammers go through.

Karl Foxley December 9, 2009 at 8:56 pm

Thanks George, I’ll probably get to it at some point soon and play around with the settings. I look forward to reading your future posts and catching up on your older ones.
