Webmasters and blog owners are always scheming to find ways to attract guest writters and sharing your revenue is one big attraction that could pull many new writters.
I can understand why guest writters are more willing to post if the incentives are in place and can not be passed up. Serradinho has been open for guest writters for a few months already and a few have signed up.
Ricky from GeniusGeeks.com asked me a few days ago If I would make Serradinho a revenue sharing blog as he would guest post more. That got me thinking really hard about what would attract more writters.
Basic Plugin Description
Author Advertising WordPress Plugin allows blog admins to create a revenue sharing program utilising one of the many advertising programs out there i.e Yahoo, Google Adsense, Amazon, Allposters etc. It can also be used as a banner manager, author photo/website widgets.. actually it has about a zillion uses.
- Developer: Harley
- Author site: Harley Quine
- WordPress link: Author Advertising
Installation:
- Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress
- Modify the settings in Settings > Author Advertising Config
- You may have to modify your theme depending on which theme you are using. Full usage instructions are on the plugin page.
Admin has complete control over:
- The percentage of author adverts to admin adverts
- The user level that an author has to be before they get to participate in the revenue sharing program
- Whether to randomise author ads on the front page of the blog
- The page that authors see before entering their publisher id
- Custom fields where you can collect additional information from your authors and display it
- The positioning and content of ads
- Up to three Author Advertising widgets
- The information that authors enter
The options for the admin are straight forward and simple to set up and be running in just a few minutes. The admin can select which lowest user levels qualify for the revenue sharing program and which do not. This can be used to entice writters to publish a certain number of posts before they can start sharing in the revenue.
User Levels shown in my backend:
- Administrators
- Editor
- Author
- Contributor
Best plugin option would be that the admin can choose what percentage of ads are from admin and guest writters.
Enter your Adsense details:
When the guest writter is logged into the backend, they will be able to see ‘Adsense Advertising’ link under the dashboard panel. This is where the user will enter their Google Adsense details to be used.
The admin can also add some additional information on this page for the user. This can help the user to better understand the location of the ad slot, conditions and terms, etc. The admin could also just create a post and refer to it via a link on the page, it depends and varies on each site/blog.
How to setup plugin:
The admin has 2 choices when implimenting the code. They can either use the automatic postitioning which might not work on all themes or by calling a function. The plugin provides four html text areas where the adsense code can be placed and altered by the admin.
Current automatic positioning:
- Advert Place 1: Just before the posts start in the main content.
- Advert Place 2: At the end of the posts in the main content.
- Advert Place 3: At the very end of the page, in the footer.
- Widget: The Author Advertising widget.
Final Thought
This plugin is not for everyone or for every site/blog, but it could bring in many guest writters. Are you using this plugin or a similar plugin? What are your experiences with this kind of promotion or plugin?
Would love to know what you think, please make sure to leave a comment and share your opinion.

George,
Can you tell me how to insert the custom codes on thesis theme –
I want to place the adsense ID just below the POST TITLE and just after the Article is Over.
Please help
Thanks
@Al – You can use the following hooks:
After post title: thesis_hook_before_post
After post: thesis_hook_after_post
For a full list of thesis hooks and details.
I apologize George, I don’t really understand. Can you give me, if you don’t mind a full code with the google Ad and the hook? Also, should I place that in custom_functions.php?
I am poor in coding.
Thanks in advance
I actually did what you said using the thesis open hook plugin George. But guess what. Adsense ads are coming in the homepage also. I wanted it in single post pages only.
Any advice please?
@Al – ok, you will have to use the is_single check as then it just displays on posts and no where else.
