I like the features for the home page. I love how simple it is, yet is has powerful features. Thanks for this post.

George Serradinho March 11, 2010 at 11:27 am

@Luigi – simple and effective for users and visitors.

Tinh March 11, 2010 at 8:51 am

Great review George. SimplePress is a great theme with special effect and I have reviewed about it too. I was offered a license that I used on my DEMO at:

The big different of this skin is that it has 2 layouts and more to come in the next version. Everything is automatic and you do not need to tweak it, special banner rotation and cu3er effect for featured. Ads are fully optimized too.

I am planning to use it for eblogtip.com with some customizations. Thanks

@Tinh – wow, you got a free license. That’s cool, would be nice if I got one also, but I doubt that would happen. Let me know when you start using it on eblogtip.com

Tinh March 12, 2010 at 3:53 am

I will. I will customize it first and then use it for eblogtip.com

Sid Savara March 11, 2010 at 11:19 am

Hi George,

The theme/skin looks great, just wanted to point out to you the link appears to be broken for me (I get a 404)

I use Thesis on one of my sites and Frugal on another. They’re both basically frameworks and have their own advantages. Since we’re talking about skins, one of the things I like about Frugal right now is they’ve recently launched a skin store and you don’t need to use FTP to upload the skin (like you do with Thesis skins, at least for now). I think Chris said Thesis has that coming in the next version though.

I really like how these frameworks are moving beyond having the user or their developer customize things manually, and making it easy to upload options. I’m a software developer, but I don’t really have an eye for design and like the flexibility the themes offer … but want someone else to use that flexibility to give me a design I like ;)

@Sid Savara – thanks for the broken link mention, it was working fine when I was still setting up the post. I have fixed it now.

The framework helps with many aspects of a site and I’m also waiting to see what the new version of Thesis has. Hope it makes life easier as my own Thesis skin is coming on slowly.

TechOfWeb March 11, 2010 at 8:24 pm

I am planning to change my blog’s theme. In 50-50 situation shall I go for this theme or any free theme as of now since I m having zero revenue from my blog till now. Don’t know what to do

@George: A question from you if u cud tell, what u say.. Are paid themes as thesis etc. prove much better than free ones available in the market?
If theres only 1-2 up or down then I think no one will go for paid ones. What such these paid themes as thesis do contain ?

I am sure as I always agree with the sentence: You get what you pay for. Paid theme will get a great support and development later on while free can not offer

George Serradinho March 12, 2010 at 9:04 am

@Tinh – it all depends on the theme developer. I agree that if one is serious about their pressence on the net, then premium themes are the way to go.

One could start of with a free theme and make some money from affiliate banners/links and then use that money to buy a premium theme. That way you don’t cough up money before you even start ;)

George Serradinho March 12, 2010 at 8:55 am

@TechOfWeb – I personally find that paid themes are much better as the support and help that is received are better. I still think that free themes are better to start off with as you get to take baby steps first, but if you are serious then premium themes are the way to go.

Dana @ Blogging Update March 12, 2010 at 12:23 am

George Serradinho March 12, 2010 at 9:06 am

@Vu Nam Hung – thanks for the response, I told Dana that she must contact you if she wants it to work without Thesis. That is mighty nice of you as a developer.

George Serradinho March 12, 2010 at 8:56 am

@Dana – I think the theme developer has developed it with the basic framework of Thesis, but you could always ask them to see what they can do.

Josiah Staggs March 12, 2010 at 2:10 am

Love the Magazine-like feel it has to it. SimplePress seems pretty clean and simple to use.

@Minh – wow, you’re lucky. Great to know that some premium theme developers are willing to give away licenses. Use it wisely :)

Davide March 17, 2010 at 1:58 am

I usually use joomla since (I think) joomla can give you more flexible site: from blog to big website.
Looking at this theme, I should try WP.

James March 19, 2010 at 12:39 pm

I too am using Joomla, but WordPress rocks too. The Thesis themeis very popular right now. Maybe too popular? That could have some drawbacks too.

George Serradinho March 20, 2010 at 11:53 am

@James – yes, it is very popular BUT also very flexible. Could you maybe list the drawbacks, would like to know your take on that.

Lee Ka Hoong March 22, 2010 at 9:07 am

The thesis skin looks plain and looks crowded. It’s more to magazine style, do you think so? But that would help for people who doesn’t know anything about thesis customization, I just know a very little about thesis customization, you know it bro. ;)

Anyway, nice sharing!

Cheers,
Lee

Riley@Las Vegas Web Design March 29, 2010 at 7:29 pm

SimplePress looks pretty nice, thanks for the overview on features and the inside look at the admin panel in WordPress. If there’s one thing I’d complain about with Thesis (I don’t have much to complain about), it’s that there doesn’t seem to be a very robust “skin” and design community. Development help is easy to find, but I’ve only come across a handful of design skins.

Dima June 2, 2010 at 12:10 pm

The blog/go/simplepress link here is infected with a trojan horse!

My AVG antivirus picked it up.

Fix up your site dude!

George Serradinho June 2, 2010 at 1:40 pm

@Dima – thanks for that info. I will have a look now, sorry for any problems caused.

George Serradinho June 4, 2010 at 8:16 am

@Dima – I had a look into the problem and found it to be the developers site that has been infected. My blog and e-junkie.com are clean. The developer has been notified and replied that he knows of the problem and is attending to it.
