Thanks that was a useful post. But again its left to the users who use the theme if they retain out link or remove it. But yes there is a good chance that most of the normal users won’t modify the credit section of a theme.
@Pradeep – yes, they can remove it, but the advantage still lies with the theme developer. Lets say 100 users download the theme and only 50 leave the credit link. That’s better than nothing, right?
Yes thats right George but I feel its necessary to research before investing. What I meant to say is ,invest only if you are damn sure that the theme is error free & its chances of getting downloaded & getting used.
An interesting way to get backlinks to your site, and the CC has been described should work just fine:) Home to a pattern like the people and it began to install.

One set back is that your theme has to be awesome with all the current themes available on the net today. It has to have cool features and easy for the user to customize.
I’m starting to look into this as a backlinking strategy as well. It seems like a good way to not only get a lot of backlinks, but backlinks with IP diversity. It’s just difficult selecting the right theme to sponsor.
@Debt – yes, it can be hard sometime, but there are loads to browse through. You are bound to find many themes on the net.
My only suggestion is to try out the theme first for yourself.
BTW, I would sponsor Thesis theme. Funny, but I’m using it now and I recommend it to all.
