With the new version of Thesis (1.6 Beta), they have included a file editor which helps the user a lot. I will be talking about it in detail here whereby you can make changes to your custom.css and custom_functions.php file.
When you install the new version, you will see that they have added an new panel for Thesis which would probably show right at the bottom in your dashboard.
This panel makes it easier for you to work with and I hope that maybe there will be more options later on in the near future.
Custom File Editor
The editor can be used to edit the custom.css as well as the custom_functions.php file. You can toggle between the two by using the drop down menu and then clicking on the ‘Edit selected file’ button.
When editing the files, you can select to either enable or disable syntax highlighting. I prefer to enable it as then you can easily identify your code. Ultimately, the choice is yours to which one to use.
I know many would probably have the Open Hook plugin installed which offers something similar. The only difference that I can see now is that the Open hook plugin also gives you the ability to see the different hooks that are available and also to be able to add details within the hooks section itself.
I actually removed the plugin from my blog as I’m very confident about my coding skills. You can decide to leave this plugin if you feel more confident having it.
Final Thought
Although this is a beta version of Thesis theme, it makes perfect sense in what they did. What are your thoughts on this? Would you still have the Open hook plugin installed? Are you confident about making code changes?

My answer is for the article ‘Thesis 1.6 Beta – Custom File Editor’. Custom file editor is a very good addition to Thesis.
At this point my choice is to use Open Hook because it gives me the precise location on the screen where the code has to be entered.
I am learning CSS. The mere presence of the editor encourages me to learn CSS more actively and to use it. It kind of winks at me all the time and asks me a question: “Ready to use it, do you know CSS enough to start using the editor?’. I did not even start learning PHP. When I am ready to code PHP, and that’s what my intention is, I will gladly use the editor.

I love the file editor of the Thesis but bit a problem while edit the file using custom stylesheet or custom function file.

@Surender – what problem were you having? I was having an issue with version 1.51 before 1.6b came out. It would insert ‘/’ all over the place. since upgrading to 1.6, the problem does not exist anymore.
I just wish there was an easy way to use my current background and header image and implement it into my Thesis theme. I like my design and hate the idea of having a new design done.
