Thesis Tutorial – Display Posts from Specific Categories on Homepage

Do you want to spice up your Thesis homepage a bit? Are you bored of your current homepage? Have you ever wanted to display posts from a specific category? If you answered Yes to any of the questions, then this post is a must read for you.

Yes, it’s another Thesis tutorial that I’m going to share with you all. As I play around more with Thesis, I enjoy it more and see the power I hold in my hands. This Thesis tutorial is very basic and should not take you longer than 5 minutes to setup and get working on your website. This can also be altered to work on any other theme, so don’t be disappointed if you are not using Thesis theme.

Please make a backup of your function and css files before trying this change.

Below you can see an example of how you can make the category boxes look like. These boxes will be displayed at the after your content, but you could change the hook and display it anywhere you like.

Homepage Teaser Category Posts

Please note that the css styling from the above image is different to the one in the download file. So yours will not look identical in the colours being used, but you can make it blend in with your website.

You could also see some of my other Thesis tutorials that I have made available for download. There are a few already for you to try out.

Things to note:

  • You will have to change the category box headings. Changes must be made between the opening and closing of the h2 tags.
  • You must change the category_name that will be used to query your database. It has to be the same as your categories you have created for your website.
  • You can also change the number of posts to selected and displayed (look for showposts=)
  • All the boxes are using the min-height and auto height styling. You can disable this by putting in the height dimensions.

You could alter the Thesis function to display the category boxes on all posts and pages. To do this you will have to remove the if statement at the top of the function. You will also have to remove the last curly bracket at the end of the function.

Thesis Tutorial - Display Specific Category Posts on Homepage

The download was made available on 24 February 2010 and is in zip format. The file size is 1.31 KB and has currently been downloaded 375 times.

Download the zipped file and get it working on your site in less than 5 minutes. You might have to play around with the formatting if you would like to enhance it a bit more, the choice is yours in the end.

Final Thought

So, this Thesis tutorial was very easy to accomplish and I hope it was easy for you too. Did you add this on your website? Would you? I would like to hear back from you all, all comments welcomed.

George Serradinho February 25, 2010 at 11:18 am

@izzat aziz – I had a look and it’s not hard to do what webdesignerdepot has done. You can use a plugin to show popular posts with thumbnail image or even a custom image. Let me know if you are interested in something like that.

George Serradinho March 9, 2010 at 3:19 pm

@sailu – I have created my images all having the same size height and width. I would take the images and then resize them to my specific dimensions (height and width) and then upload them and reference the url.

Nicole July 29, 2010 at 8:43 am

Thanks for the code. Is it possible to add an thumbnail to each post (i.e. take the first image from the post and add the thumbnail next to the title)?

George Serradinho July 29, 2010 at 1:18 pm

@Nicole – yes it is possible. You could use the first image or even a custom field that you enter. Would you like me to help you out? If yes, then please use my contact page and let me know.

Nicole July 29, 2010 at 4:53 pm

I sent it via your contact page but it isn’t clear if it went through or not.
