Thesis Tutorial – Display Tweetmeme button in Posts and Homepage

I have been asked how I got my blog to show the Tweetmeme button on normal posts as well as the homepage. This Thesis tutorial explains what needs to be done to achieve this and should not take more than five minutes.

One could install the WordPress Tweetmeme plugin to display the button, but I don’t think it will be shown on your homepage. This post will explain how to achieve the same results and even better using the javascript from their site.

I have used the javascript as I have so many plugins already installed on my blog and I like to use alternate methods if I can.

Tweetmeme button on posts (homepage)

Tweetmeme button on posts (homepage)

They have actually given you the option of showing the full or the compact button, I have used the full button in this example, but you will be able to see both the buttons below.

Tweetmeme Buttons

Tweetmeme Buttons

Please make a backup of your functions file before trying this change.

Thesis Function

The function must be copied to your custom_functions.php. You can decide if you want the button to float on the left or right hand side.

The functions are tweet_button_left and tweet_button_right, you can decide which one you would like to use. You can see the difference in styling in the div tag, I used a margin to make sure there is a small gap in between the button and post details.

Thesis Tutorial - Display Tweetmeme button on Posts

The download was made available on 8 December 2009 and is in zip format. The file size is 954 bytes and has currently been downloaded 211 times.

Download the zipped file and get it working on your site in less than 5 minutes.

You might have to play around with the formatting if you would like to enhance it a bit more, the choice is yours in the end.

You could always check out my other Thesis tutorials and news if you want. There might be something you like and would want to implement on your site/blog.

Final Thought

So, this Thesis tutorial was very easy to accomplish and I hope it was easy for you too. Did you implement this on your site? Would you? I would like to hear back from you all, all comments welcomed.

They are using tweetme, Fbshare and Digg all 3 in vertical alignment on teaser..I think it will give post a good look + quite easy to share of Fb n digg as well.
I was wondering if its possible :)

@Ankit – I will check when I get home on my local WP installation. I see they use a div tag and then place the other div tags inside for Tweetmeme and Facebook.

In DiggDigg plugin there is a option of showing Vertical. You can use Digg, Twitter, Facebook, anything else with that plugin.

Nice tutorial George, yesterday only I added TweetMeMe button and Digg button on my blog, by using DiggDigg plugin but somehow it is not displaying on Home Page, I think I will need to tweak some more in it.

Thanks!

@Sahil – my tutorial is for teaser posts and I see you are using feature posts on homepage. Look at my css file to make teasers full width or go to Thesis Answers.

Hi George. Thesis theme is famous all over the blogosphere. I am not surprised if it has lots of nice features as the Twitter button.

But I guess their affiliate framework is not really clean in an aspect. I’d love to see a landing page of

rather than

I’d love to promote Thesis on my blog (I’ve registered as an affiliate), but I just couldn’t stand that clunky link, even after GoCodes masking.

@Isaac – I doubt it would look clunky if you use GoCodes, but I’m also sure you can change the link in the affiliate backend. You login the affiliate backend and go to Promotion >> Advanced Tools. You can cloak the link there. Maybe have a look and try it, but I would use GoCodes.

@gadgetguide4u – just use the Facebook javascript code instead of the tweetmeme one. It should work 100%. You can find the javascript code via a google search.
