Disregard my last message – turns out that code just takes the twitter username of the last commenter, and inserts that instead

By the way, you should add this to the value of the twitter username field in your commentform: php echo $comment->twitlinkid;

then the Twitter username is automatically displayed for returned users.

@Klaus – I know what you mean, but I made a backup of the file and it’s the only way as there is not a hook for it. At least I don’t know about one. If you want me to change it for you, let me know (I’m running thesis 1.6).
