Thesis Tutorial – Thesis Previous & Next Link Tips

by George Serradinho on September 7, 2009

This is yet another Thesis tips post, my previous post about Thesis tips to make blog unique and helped with a few basics changes. This second part is even more basic, it just covers the previous and next links found on pages and posts. You will be able to style and move them around.

You could stop by my Thesis category and see my other Thesis customizations.

1. Previous & Next Links – Style (Posts)

This is purely for single post pages only, you will have to put the css styling in your custom.css file. You can then change to your preferences, you also could add the font-size attribute:

2. Previous & Next Links – Style (Pages)

This is the same as above, but the only difference is that this is for pages only.

3. Previous & Next Links – From After Content to Before Content

On Single Post Pages. Place the PHP add actions in the custom_functions.php file. Here we are removing the links at the end and placing it before the content.

4. Previous & Next Links – Remove on Home Page Only

Place the PHP function in the in custom_functions.php file and it will remove it from the homepage.

5. Previous & Next Links – On Home, Archive, and Search Pages

Place the remove and add action in the custom_functions.php file for it to be displayed on the homepage, archive page and search page.

I have edited this post and put the CSS and PHP in a text file. Download the zipped file and get it working on your site in less than 10 minutes.

Final Thoughts

This Thesis post covered the previous and next links found on pages and posts. Have you moved your links around or changed them to a bigger font size? I would love to know your opinions if you like it on top or the bottom or both?

I think you forgot to replace a “placeholder” or something :D Below #2 it says “dsadasdad”.

Regarding the next/prev links, I’m actually quite happy with their placement and looks out of the box, so I’m not sure if I want to play around with them, yet.

So, have you seen an increase in pageviews or just clicks on your “previous/next”-posts links after you made them red?

If you’ve seen an increase directly related to making them stand out more, than I’ll be sure to consider copying your trick :D

@Klaus – I don’t know if I will be able to see if they are clicking on it more, but the point would be to make it stand out and be noticed more.

Not sure, but maybe Google Analytics can give you some points with their ’site overlay’ feature?
