I just logged in now and saw the upgrade bar for WordPress 2.8.1. The long awaited WordPress 2.8.1 is out and ready to be downloaded. I must say that I thought it would only be out some time next week.
The update highlights are listed on the dev blog post and all the changes since 2.8 are on the Trac.
Some of the changes are listed below:
- Dashboard memory usage is reduced. Some people were running out of memory when loading the dashboard, resulting in an incomplete page.
- The automatic upgrade no longer accidentally deletes files when cleaning up from a failed upgrade.
- A problem where the rich text editor wasn’t being loaded due to compression issues has been worked around.
- Extra security has been put in place to better protect you from plugins that do not do explicit permission checks.
- wp_page_menu() defaults to sorting by the user specified menu order rather than the page title.
- Autosave error experienced by some IE users is fixed.
- Styling glitch in the plugin editor fixed.
- SSH2 filesystem requirements updated.
- Stricter menu security.
- Disabled code highlighting due to browser incompatibilities.
Sorry that this post so short, but you can follow the links above to see all the details.

@Jacob Yap – I said it would be short, did not want to write to many details and give everything away.
I just upgraded last night to this. They recommend that you backup your site before upgrading so I went on a search for a good backup plugin for Wordpress. I found one, but I was wondering what you used over here. Is there a plugin that you all recommend for backing up files and databases on Wordpress?

@Nicholas – backing up before upgrading is a must, just in case something happens.
I’m using ‘WP-DBManager’ plugin as it can send you emails with your backed up DB and it also optimizes your DB.
I am also using that plugin only. And I have upgraded WP without any problem.

@Jake – there are many fixes indeed. You can always read up more about it.
I heard that there are problems associated with 2.8 so i have not upgraded to 2.8 also, do you faced any problems ?
@Ruchi – I had no problems, but I do know a few had problems with blank pages. This was addressed in WP 2.8.1
I’m still at 2.7 .. need to upgrade to the latest version
Cheers

@CLP – there are many new cool updates, so upgrade now and start reeping the benefits.
Will wait for a few more days or week maybe. Cause last time when I’m upgrading it from 2.7 to 2.8 version… I’m facing a lot of problems with the widget section. And by the way, thanks George.
