I woke this morning to a notification about a new version of WordPress. Yes, that’s right. We are now at version 2.8.5 and this version is for protection purposes so upgrade ASAP.
Changes in this release are:
- A fix for the Trackback Denial-of-Service attack that is currently being seen.
- Removal of areas within the code where php code in variables was evaluated.
- Switched the file upload functionality to be whitelisted for all users including Admins.
- Retiring of the two importers of Tag data from old plugins.
WordPress suggests that you try WordPress Exploit Scanner plugin to see if your site has been compromised and that you upgrade now to help protect your site. The plugin will search your files on your website, and the posts and comments tables of your database for anything suspicious.
Please remember to make a backup of your database and files before upgrading.
Get WordPress version 2.8.5 now
P.S. I upgraded automatically and had no problems at all.
Final Thought
Would like to know if you have upgraded to the new version already? Are you using an old version? Did you upgrade manually or automatically?

George, I noticed this too and said to my self; ” What a way to say (Good Morning) ” since I saw it in the morning here. Me too upgraded it automatically and everything seems fine.

@christie – upgrade to protect your site from attacks and bugs, rather be safe and do it when you can.
It’s good to hear/read that you didn’t run into any problems, George – makes me more confident to upgrade as I was a bit apprehensive. Of course I’ll start with my least important one first!
@Karen – some run into problems and others not. Just remember to backup your database and files in case something goes wrong.
