by George Serradinho on January 6, 2010

Guess what? There is a new release of WordPress and it’s version 2.9.1. If you are using WordPress, then I suggest you upgrade ASAP as this version fixes many bugs.

Many of you will have noticed the message to upgrade to WP 2.9.1 when you logged into your dashboard. I can’t say that I was surprised as many users gave feedback and there was a few bugs that needed to be fixed.

Please backup your files and database before upgrading.

Just for purpose of sharing some statistics with you, I thought it would be nice to show you how many times WordPress 2.9 has been downloaded. This is just awesome and shows where WP stands.

George, it’s nice to see someone else follow Trac. I’ve even subscribed to the RSS feeds for versions in the past. Very handy.

So far, only 1 person I know has had trouble with this upgrade. It’s gone fine for me across the board.

@Dave Doolin – Trac does help as you get to know more about whats going on, instead of just following the pack.

@John – thanks man. I have been thinking of the future of WP, how it will evolve in the next coming years. What else can be done to make it easier and goof-free for users (goof-free suggested by James M). I guess we will have to wait and see what happens.

I use WordPress, but lack knowledge of all the ins&outs. In an older version, I could specifically set whether links were follow or no follow. On this new version 2.9.1, I can’t seem to find where to determine that (its not in Settings or Tools that I can see). Am I missing it? OR is an attribute baked in already? I appreciate your help, know this isn’t an official forum per se.

When Wordpress 2.90 launched, someone told me not to upgrade it 1st until Wordpress 2.91. I always afraid of upgrading as I worry there will be some error occurred and it could take me days to fix it. So I’ll only upgrade when I really need, or after a few version launched.

Anyway, I’ll be upgrading to Wordpress 2.91 shortly. :)

Cheers,
Lee

Upgrading requires more memory now, at least with some hosts. I always heard before that WordPress was bloatware, maybe there is some truth to that?

I had some upgrade problems too but I got around the problem by deactivating my plugins and reactivating them.

I’m actually still on wordpress 2.6.5 and want to update to 2.9.2
when update automatic always pop out this error messages. Please somebody help me..

@Laila – Wow, you should update ASAP. I suggest you maybe upgrade one version at a time until you get to version 2.9.2. I can say that you have missed many security fixes which might leave your site open to attacks.

BTW, why did you never upgrade your WordPress? Was there a specific reason? Would love to know :)

Getting a similar problem when using Auto Update but mine just hangs at ‘unpacking’ so there’s not even a clue as to why it has stopped! Any ideas??

@Mobiles – maybe download WordPress and then just over write your current folder. Be sure to backup your files and database before doing anything. Look at what changed and then ftp those files across.
